Panoramic Windows in Kazakhstan: Warm in Winter, Light Year-Round
In Kazakhstan's climate, panoramic windows hold the heat with energy-efficient glass. We unpack the glazing physics, a handover checklist, and the mistakes buyers make most often.

For years, panoramic windows in Kazakhstan were treated as a beautiful but risky idea: a hard winter, wind, sharp swings in temperature. The fear was simple — you would be heating the street. That is no longer the case. When the glazing unit uses energy-efficient glass, a large glazed area gives you light and a view, not a draft. Below: how it works, what to inspect in a finished apartment, and the mistakes buyers make most often.
Why panoramic windows work in our climate
Kazakhstan's climate means a long heating season, sharp frosts, bright winter sun and dust in summer. Ordinary glass loses in that regime: heat escapes, condensation forms on the inner surface, and cold bridges appear at the frames.
Panoramic windows change the picture only together with the right glazing unit and a sealed perimeter. A large glazed area increases both heat loss and solar gain. In winter, the low sun can warm a room noticeably. In summer, without a proper unit and shading, you get overheating. The question is not whether to install them, but which glass and how it is fitted.
In low-rise buildings this is especially clear: fewer neighbours, more sky in the frame. At HAYAT Residence in Ekibastuz, six storeys and panoramic windows with energy-efficient glass are a typical business-class brief: a view and daylight without giving up brick walls.
Energy-efficient glass: physics, not a slogan
Energy-efficient glass is a coating. A thin layer of metal oxides is applied to the surface. It reflects long-wave thermal radiation back into the room and lets visible light through. In everyday language this is called i-glass or low-e glass.
In practice this means:
- in winter, heat from radiators and people is less likely to escape;
- the inner surface of the glass is warmer, so there is less condensation;
- in summer, part of the solar heat is reflected if a solar-control or multifunctional coating is specified;
- for the same window size, the load on heating is lower.
A single coated pane in a single-chamber unit is not the same as a double-chamber unit with the right specification. For Kazakhstan, the usual brief is a double-chamber glazing unit, argon fill, a warm-edge spacer and a high-quality installation joint. Glass without a sealed perimeter and warm reveals will not perform: cold will travel around the edge.
Orientation matters too. South and south-west give a winter bonus in light and heat, and need shading in summer. North is more stable in temperature, but takes away some daylight. North-facing panoramic windows make sense if there is a view beyond them and if the unit is genuinely warm.
Panoramic windows do not heat a room by square metres of glass, but by the unit specification, the joint and heating under the opening.
Light, ceilings and an open plan
Light in an apartment depends on more than the window. Ceilings of 3 metres lift the room visually and let light travel deeper into the volume. An open plan lets you place the living room against the glass and the bedroom in a more private zone, without touching load-bearing walls.
Apartments without finishes are more convenient in this sense: you decide where the curtain recess goes, where underfloor heating runs by the glass, where the sockets for an electric track sit. A finished interior often locks in someone else's mistakes — a short track, a cold sill, a socket three metres from the curtain.
Floor areas of 112–190 m² work with panoramic glazing if you do not slice the space into small dark rooms. One large, light volume plus bedrooms with proper windows is usually better than an enfilade of narrow rooms.
A practical handover checklist
A completed home has an advantage over off-plan: you can put your hand on the window. The table below works for any building that has already been commissioned and is being occupied.
| Item | What to check |
|---|---|
| Glazing specification | Number of chambers, presence of i-glass, gas fill. The word energy-efficient without a specification means nothing. |
| Glass and frame corners | In winter, put your hand on the centre of the glass and on the corner. The corner should not feel icy. |
| Condensation | The lower edge of the unit, reveals, the sill. Traces of moisture mean a cold bridge or weak ventilation. |
| Installation joint | Weather protection and drainage outside, a vapour barrier inside. Bare foam soaks over time. |
| Hardware and compression | Micro-ventilation, even compression around the perimeter. Weak compression lets in a draft in the wind. |
| Heating under the window | A radiator, a trench convector or underfloor heating. Otherwise the glass will pull cold into the room. |
| Noise | Close the sash. A large glass area lets through more sound than a wall; gaps amplify the effect. |
| Sun and curtains | Where light falls through the day. In summer, a panorama without shading turns into a greenhouse. |
Brick walls in ochre-yellow clinker hold heat better than thin rainscreen façades. A dark graphite marble plinth barely affects the apartment's microclimate, but it shows how the building handles moisture and dirt at ground level.
What lies beyond the glass, and mistakes not to repeat
A window works as part of the building. A gated courtyard without cars cuts dust and noise — you can open a sash without listening to car alarms. CCTV with online access, IP intercoms and smart locks do not heat the room, but they take the anxiety away: panoramic windows on the lower floors sell less often without proper security. Designer lobbies with contemporary finishes are worth judging on site: the hall says a great deal about the building.
Underground parking with a lift straight to the residential floor saves time in winter and does not leave the entrance door standing open. An 80 kW charging station for electric cars is no longer exotic if you are thinking a few years ahead. Storage rooms on the floors take the load off the apartment: seasonal things do not sit by the glass and spoil the view.
A Romana children's playground, a workout area, basketball and spruce trees in the courtyard — that is what you see from the window every day. A view of a car park and a view of a landscaped courtyard are different products with the same glazing unit.
On the ground floor of HAYAT Residence, the CHEKHOV café is open: a hall, a play area, a VIP room. For residents above, it is a service; for apartments facing the courtyard, it is a reason to check sound insulation in the evening, not only at noon. Across the road are Baiterek Square and the Oner Cultural Centre: a panorama makes sense if there is not a blank fence beyond the glass.
The typical mistakes are the same in any city: choosing an apartment only by glazed area, ignoring ventilation, saving on reveals, not looking at the floor and the aspect. Energy-efficient glass is tighter than old frames — without a supply of air, condensation will appear even on a good unit. In a six-storey building, the second floor and the sixth look out on different things: four entrances and 60 apartments give you room to choose, but the building has to be seen in person.
A short conclusion
Panoramic windows in Kazakhstan are a working solution when the unit has energy-efficient glass, a sealed installation and heating under the opening. Look at the glazing specification, the reveals, condensation, sash compression and what lies beyond the glass: the courtyard, noise, the sun. A completed home lets you check this with your hands, rather than trusting a brochure.
HAYAT Residence at 24 Akademik Mardenov Boulevard in Ekibastuz is an example of this approach: brick, panoramic windows with energy-efficient glass, a gated courtyard, underground parking with a lift. The developer is Gidroprom LLP. Sales office: +7 775 333 30 14, phone and WhatsApp, daily from 9:00 to 20:00, website hayat-residence.kz. Even if you choose another building, the checklist above will stay the same.
